02 Jul Grassroots Radio at the Oral History Network of Ireland Conference
University College Cork and Bere Island Heritage Centre represented the Grassroots Project at the recent Oral History Network of Ireland Conference in Limerick. The conference was about oral histories in the digital age and we presented ideas of collecting Bere island’s oral histories via the community radio platform. We met with lots of other communities, practitioners and academics and have come away with lots of ideas. We hope to use the radio and the stories that people tell on it, as a way of preserving the heritage of the island, which like many Irish islands is faced with rural depopulation. Through capturing stories and heritage, we hope that the radio will become a platform of exchange and debate about the future of the island.
