Com­mu­ni­ty radio and the future of the West Cork Islands

On Octo­ber 11, Uni­ver­si­ty Col­lege Cork (UCC), in con­junc­tion with the West Cork Islands Com­mu­ni­ty Coun­cil, will host a half day think-in event about the future and sus­tain­abil­i­ty of the West Cork Islands and how a com­mu­ni­ty radio plat­form might sup­port this at the local lev­els. Islanders, aca­d­e­mics and pol­i­cy mak­ers will work togeth­er in a world café for­mat to brain­storm nov­el ideas and ways for­ward. The event will be record­ed for Bere Island Com­mu­ni­ty Radio and the forth­com­ing radio sta­tion in Roar­ing Water Bay that will serve Cape Clear and Sherkin islands. It will be cap­tured visu­al­ly by an artist and shared with the wider islander com­mu­ni­ties.

On Sat­ur­day 12 Octo­ber, there will be an ini­tial com­mu­ni­ty con­sul­ta­tion on Sherkin islands about the new radio plat­form for these com­mu­ni­ties on how it might sup­port com­mu­ni­ty needs. On Bere island, on Sun­day 13 Octo­ber, there will be a work­shop that will fos­ters reflec­tion on the radio plat­form so far, and how it can sup­port com­mu­ni­ty needs mov­ing for­ward.
