14 Nov Impressions from the Web Summit tech conference, 5–8 November, 2018, Lisbon
A gigantic, trendy initiative reuniting tech organizations from all over the world: large and small, established orgs as well as start-ups, proprietary tech as well as open tech, products serving individuals as well as communities. Good for visibility if you have a booth. Challenging to network unless you have a preset agenda/contacts.
Grassroots Radio had a booth on Nov 6th — and had representation from M-ITI : Duarte Sousa (communities & content) and RootIO (underlying technology) Jude Mukundane and Andreea Bonea. This was the day where our project got most visibility and we each of us talked to approximately 20–30 interested people.
The highlight was the visit of the European Commissioner for Research Science and Innovation — Carlos Moedas, who mentioned that EU will increase the budget for social innovation, “not because it’s trendy, but because we believe that the future of innovation is about social innovation”.
Along with the founder of Web Summit, Commissioner Moedas, visited the Social Innovation Village area (where EU funded projects had their booth) and he chatted with select projects. Grassroots Radio was one of them. The Commissioner mentioned an earlier visit to M-ITI and meeting ‘the American Professor’ that came up with this idea — and that he was glad that this idea came to fruition with the aid of the EC. Moedas was accompanied by the portuguese Minister of the Presidency and of Administrative Modernisation — Maria Manuel Marques, the French Secretary of State for Digital Affairs — Mounir Mahjoubi, as well as, the Web Summitt’s creator — Paddy Cosgrave.
Grassroots Radio also visited the EC invest team to scope out like minded initiatives or projects, where couple reference materials/websites were presented:
Grassroots Radio also attended an inspiring presentation delivered by the Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager around fair democracy and the role that technology plays in this equation.
